I am a software engineer with 15 years of polyglot experience in multiple levels of the web stack. I have a strong track record of technical leadership and building scalable and highly reliable systems that grow and remain strong over the long term.
Most recently I have spent seven years growing New Relic’s Elixir-based GraphQL API layer from a small service fielding 200 requests per minute, to the federated API gateway it is today, serving 800k RPM. The API powers New Relic’s entire React UI layer, mobile app, dozens of backend systems, and countless customer integrations. I’m proud to say we have done all of this with one of the strongest reliability records in the company, all while maintaining a continuous deployment pipeline with daily pushes to production.
Along the way I became the company’s expert in Elixir/Erlang OTP, which required me to build deep expertise in Elixir, Erlang and the BEAM. As a heavy user of Absinthe I have contributed multiple fixes back to the library as we uncovered unexpected edge cases. I have also helped build our team’s React-based API explorer.
Of course, engineering goes beyond just the technical—it requires focus on the people who build the systems as well. I have always been passionate about mentoring, and taught at Dev Bootcamp Chicago for nearly four years to pursue mentoring full-time. At New Relic I invested heavily in our team’s culture of psychological safety and growth, which helped support our team’s exceptional record of retention and career advancement. I believe a team’s success is as much rooted in the growth of its people as the growth of its technical platform.
I am exploring many different kinds of roles as I consider moving on from my current employer, with my primary focus being on the people I’ll be working with and the kinds of problems we’ll be solving.
